Beyond Likeness: Rethinking the Achebe Sculpture Debate

Beyond Likeness: Rethinking the Achebe Sculpture Debate — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The debate over the newly unveiled Chinua Achebe sculpture at Ugwu Nwasike has focused on how closely it resembles the late author. Yet sculpture is interpretation, not a stone photocopy. Every artist adds personal style, symbolism and technique. This tribute was commissioned by the Ogidi Town Union, not the state government. The governor only lent his office to the ceremony. It is a community project celebrating one of Nigeria’s greatest sons and should not be politicized. We face urgent challenges in politics, the economy and security. Endless arguments over facial likeness distract us from more pressing issues. The true value of the monument lies in its intention to preserve Achebe’s memory and inspire future generations.

The sculptor's personal style and symbolism definitely shine through, yet those bold techniques almost overshadow Achebe's recognizable likeness.

Perhaps the museum should add an information plaque explaining the sculptor's stylistic intent, symbolism and technique behind this Achebe tribute.
