Lagos High Court Sentences Man to Death for Stabbing Rival Over Woman

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has found Justice Odey guilty of murdering 35-year-old Benedict Agara during a fight over a woman on April 3, 2021. The prosecution called ASP Mariam Ibrahim and tendered six exhibits to show Odey stabbed Agara with a broken bottle at Jakande Housing Estate, leading to fatal injuries. In her judgment, Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay held that the evidence proved murder beyond a reasonable doubt. She ruled that medical proof, though helpful, was not essential where the manner of death is clear from the facts. The court also rejected Odey’s confessional statement as inadmissible, concluding he alone caused Agara’s death. Odey was sentenced to death by hanging.
