Why the World Cup Misses Cameroon and Italy but Overlooks Nigeria

Nigeria has qualified for six World Cups but never progressed beyond the Round of 16. In contrast, Ghana, Senegal and Morocco have all reached the quarterfinals. Despite three Africa Cup of Nations titles from nearly 30 appearances, Nigeria’s global impact remains limited. Even Enyimba is the only Nigerian club to lift the CAF Champions League trophy, and they did it twice. We often criticize other nations for overhyping their teams. Yet we are equally guilty of ignoring our own shortcomings. If Nigeria had reached this World Cup, they likely would have bowed out at the Round of 16 again.

Given six World Cup appearances, it's surprising Nigeria hasn't mirrored Ghana or Senegal's quarterfinal runs yet.

I'm not convinced it's just bad luck; unstable coaching hires and federation politics might hurt Nigeria's World Cup bids more than any performance gap.

Focusing on developing youth leagues and consistent tactical training could give future Super Eagles squads the edge to break past the Round of 16.
