Obosi Union Leader Backs Anyaoku’s Call for Six-Region Government

The President-General of Obosi Development Union Worldwide, Barr. Chimezie Obi, has backed former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku’s call for Nigeria to adopt a regional system of government. Obi argued that the current 36-state structure and highly centralised federal system are costly to run and limit development. He said a six-region arrangement based on the geopolitical zones could reduce governance costs, improve accountability and encourage competition among regions. He added that greater constitutional powers for the regions could improve security, resource management and public services. Obi urged the President, National Assembly, state legislatures and civil society groups to begin an inclusive process of constitutional reform, stressing that regionalism should strengthen national unity rather than promote secession.
