Senator Nwaebonyi Says Nigerians Who Depend on Markets for Food Are “Lazy”

Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, has drawn criticism after saying Nigerians who can produce food but depend on markets are “lazy.” He made the remarks while defending the Tinubu administration’s handling of food inflation and the rising cost of living. The Ebonyi North senator said government should be held accountable for infrastructure, power, education and healthcare, but argued that citizens must also increase food production. He questioned whether the President should be expected to control the price of garri, yam and other staples sold in markets. Nwaebonyi said he farms in Ebonyi State and produces most of the food he consumes. He argued that greater household and community farming would increase supply and eventually reduce food prices. His comments come as many Nigerians continue to struggle with the high cost of staple foods and broader economic hardship.
