FCT Court Orders SERAP to Pay N100m to DSS Operatives in Defamation Case

FCT Court Orders SERAP to Pay N100m to DSS Operatives in Defamation Case

Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has awarded N100 million in damages to two DSS operatives over a defamation suit against SERAP. The case stemmed from allegations that the officers unlawfully occupied SERAP’s Abuja office on September 9, 2024. The court also directed SERAP to publish a public apology in two national newspapers and on two television stations. It granted an additional N1 million for legal costs and imposed 10% interest on the damages until full payment. SERAP had alleged on its social media that the officers were harassing its staff. The judgment found those claims to be false and held SERAP liable for defamation.

Are courts too quick to award huge sums for defamation, especially in political or security contexts like this N100m DSS case?

It's ironic SERAP, known for human rights advocacy, ended up ordered to pay N100m over alleged office occupation claims.

While SERAP lost this case, courts shouldn't deter civil society from probing security agencies over rights violations.

Civil groups should document every step of office access disputes and seek mediation before escalating to costly court battles.
