Court Battle Over Abiodun’s Eligibility Puts APC and INEC in a Tight Spot

A Federal High Court in Lagos will decide whether Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun is constitutionally barred from holding any elective office. The suit alleges he lied under oath, submitted conflicting educational records and concealed a 1986 US criminal conviction. A civil society group filed the case, backing it with affidavits, exhibits and a legal caveat served on APC, INEC and other parties. Receipt stamps confirm both institutions know about the suit, yet neither has issued a public response. If APC or INEC continue to back Abiodun, they risk being seen as complicit in covering up alleged false declarations. Withdrawing support would expose flaws in their vetting process. The court’s decision could reshape the 2026 elections in Ogun State.

Do you think INEC's handling of Abiodun's records could set a precedent for stricter vetting in future elections?

It's odd that conflicting academic transcripts and a decades-old conviction only became public after multiple election cycles.

I'm not convinced all allegations will hold up in court, given the legal team's reputation and usual procedural delays in such cases.

To prevent similar controversies, parties should demand thorough vetting of candidates' academic and criminal records before nomination deadlines.
