Time to Boycott Japanese Cars After Japan’s UN Abstention on Transatlantic Slavery Resolution

Time to Boycott Japanese Cars After Japan’s UN Abstention on Transatlantic Slavery Resolution

On March 25, 2026, the UN General Assembly recognized the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the gravest crime against humanity. Japan abstained instead of supporting Black Africans. I urge my fellow Black Africans to respond by avoiding Japanese-made vehicles such as Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi. We can turn to African brands like Innoson and Nord, Ghana’s Kantanka, or other alternatives such as Chinese models from Geely, GAC, Chery, and BYD. Dealers and spare-parts sellers should begin offering these options. This change may take years, but we deserve dignity and self-respect. It’s time to assert our economic independence and refuse to support those who abandoned us.

What impact do you think boycotting Japanese cars will have on our communities and on Japan's stance at the UN?

Are we sure boycotting cars can sway a UN vote, or is that impact overly optimistic?

I hear you—boycott might push Japan to rethink, even as it challenges local mechanics and traders who depend on those cars.

It's interesting that Japan chose abstention over a firm stance against transatlantic slavery, but do we know their reasoning behind this vote?

Are we sure targeting car sales is the right response? Economic protests can sometimes backfire on local communities.

We could start by organizing a shared transport co-op or promote local mechanics instead of focusing solely on Japanese imports.
