Skate Lagos 3.0 Awards ₦2M Prize Pool and 25 Pro Skate Boots to Young Talents

Skate Lagos 3.0 Awards ₦2M Prize Pool and 25 Pro Skate Boots to Young Talents

The third Skate Lagos event took place at the National Stadium in Surulere on May 30 under the theme “Rolling Into the Future.” Hundreds of skaters from Lagos and beyond competed in a grassroots initiative organized by the state government’s Office of the Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development. Winners in slalom, sprint races, and free jump shared a ₦2 million prize pool. Top performers in each category received cash awards ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦250,000. Just Used Tech, a Lagos-based sports technology company, donated 25 pairs of professional skate boots to standout grassroots skaters, boosting efforts to nurture emerging talents. Organizers urged participants to pursue skating as a professional career and adhere to safe practices. The Lagos State Roller Sports Association called for more private-sector support and formal recognition of skating by the state sports commission.

Is it really the prize money, the pro boots, or something else that will motivate young skaters?

It's impressive they offered ₦2M prize pool and pro boots, but I wonder if grassroots skaters outside Lagos had equal access.

I get celebrating these winners, but isn't focusing solely on awards missing opportunities to build sustainable community programs?

Organizers could partner with local youth centers to offer ongoing skate workshops and mentorship beyond the competition.
