When Obasanjo Fooled Me and My AD Colleagues in 2003
In 2002, President Obasanjo invited the six AD governors to Lagos for talks. He asked for our support and promised a working relationship. We insisted he must first discuss with Afenifere elders and agree on major demands. Our conditions included restructuring the federation, fiscal federalism, devolution of powers, merit-based appointments, and a transparent census using satellite mapping. Obasanjo spoke convincingly about privatization and genuine headcounts, and he appeared ready to deliver. He then enlisted royal fathers and community leaders to pressure me into supporting his second term. Obas of Ife, Egbaland, Lagos, Osogbo, and Ijebu all appealed for unity and a smooth civilian transition. We agreed to back his 2003 re-election. Later, however, his promises never materialized, and it became clear that he had told us only what we wanted to hear.
