FG Approves N549bn for Carter Bridge Rebuild with Flyover Extension

FG Approves N549bn for Carter Bridge Rebuild with Flyover Extension

The federal government has approved N548.98bn for the demolition and reconstruction of Carter Bridge in Lagos. Technical assessments found critical underwater piles and caps beyond repair, prompting a full rebuild as the only viable option. The Minister of Works announced that investigations in 2013, 2019 and a recent review all pointed to severe structural deterioration. A competitive bidding process led to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation’s selection for the project. The redesigned bridge will stretch from 1.525km to 1.93km, including a new flyover ramp to ease chronic traffic bottlenecks. Dual navigational waterways of 105m each will also improve marine movement. The Federal Executive Council also approved N24.89bn for underwater repairs on Third Mainland Bridge. This work is set for completion ahead of President Tinubu’s third anniversary on 29 May.

What impact do you think rebuilding Carter Bridge with a flyover extension will have on daily traffic and local businesses in Lagos?

I share that view, expanding capacity could reduce peak-hour backups and help vendors by improving customer flow.

I'm not convinced traffic flow will improve significantly; local vendors might still struggle with disrupted access.

Approving almost N549bn for reconstruction seems huge, especially when underwater assessments were the main reason for a full rebuild.

I respect the safety angle, but demolishing the entire bridge instead of phased repairs just seems excessive, no be wetin dem need now.

They should set up clear timelines and milestones, engage local contractors where possible, and monitor progress to avoid any budget overruns.
