COOU Introduces ₦15,000 Per-Session Portal App Fee; Students Push Back

COOU Introduces ₦15,000 Per-Session Portal App Fee; Students Push Back — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University has launched a new mobile portal app that requires each student to pay a ₦15,000 maintenance fee every academic session to register courses. This app replaces the existing website functions and comes with a strict download and payment deadline. Many students have taken to social media, sharing screenshots of errors and criticizing technical glitches. They argue the levy is unnecessary and burdensome, especially when the current online portal already works without extra charges. The app was briefly removed from official stores after backlash but was quickly reinstated amid a flood of positive reviews. With over 20,000 students enrolled, the fee amounts to more than ₦300 million each session. Protesters are calling on the ICT Directorate to consult the student body before rolling out costly initiatives and to review the redundancy of this new platform.

What prompted COOU to set such a high per-session portal app fee instead of sticking to their existing website?

You have a point, that fee is eye-watering, though maybe they believe the app adds enough value to justify it.

I notice maintaining a mobile app often costs more, but charging students directly for each session feels unusual and may raise equity concerns.

Abi the school no fit explore sponsorship or ads revenue instead of forcing students to pay fifteen thousand every session?

Students could form a committee to negotiate fee reductions or request a transparent breakdown of app maintenance costs from the university administration.
