FG Warns Illegal Wildlife Trade Is Threatening Nigeria’s Biodiversity

The Federal Government has warned that illegal wildlife trade remains a major threat to Nigeria’s biodiversity, forests and endangered species. Speaking at the 2026 World Ranger Day event in Abuja, Environment Minister Balarabe Lawal said climate change and habitat loss are worsening the pressure on wildlife. He praised park rangers working in national parks across the country for protecting animals, forests and other natural resources. National Park Service Conservator General Ibrahim Goni said rangers also confront armed poachers, illegal miners, loggers, bandits and kidnappers. He paid tribute to 23 rangers who lost their lives while serving in Nigeria’s national parks. Goni added that rangers from Old Oyo National Park recently helped rescue 44 abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State, highlighting their growing role in protecting both wildlife and communities.
