Speeding Bus Ploughs into Worshippers in Yobe, Killing Two and Injuring 32
On Friday, May 4, a commercial passenger bus lost control due to excessive speed and crashed into worshippers observing Jumaat prayers at JIBWIS Jumaat Mosque on the Kano–Maiduguri highway in Damagum, Fune LGA, Yobe State. Two people died on the spot and 32 others were wounded. The Deputy Governor, Idi Barde Gubana, led a government delegation to the Emir’s palace in Damagum to console the victims’ families and injured worshippers. He announced a N2 million support fund and free medical treatment for all affected. The state government plans to introduce road safety measures—such as roundabouts and speed bumps—along high-risk sections of the highway. Following the crash, some residents set the bus ablaze, prompting security operatives to restore order. The Deputy Governor appealed to Islamic scholars and community leaders to discourage roadside prayers and urged the FRSC and security agencies to enforce speed limits. The Emir of Fune also called for additional traffic-calming measures in neighbouring communities.
