How My Mission to Reform a Romance Scammer Backfired
I work in cyber security awareness and founded a digital sensitisation company. My goal has always been to help young Nigerians and other Africans in Nigeria turn away from internet fraud and build legitimate businesses. I once met a Cameroonian man, “Aquila Takim Boniface,” who posed as a UN psychiatrist and romance expert online. He scammed an older European woman for years. He later asked me to use my domiciliary account to receive his stolen funds. I agreed on strict conditions: invest in cassava processing and local agriculture, allocate portions to his victim, the government, and the European authorities, and quit scamming within five months. He accepted and we built equipment and trained staff. After five months, he refused to stop the fraud. He dismantled our equipment, threatened me and my family, and kept scamming the European victim. I share this story to raise awareness and urge law enforcement to act against internet fraud.
