FG Launches Satellite-Based TV Service to Reach 40 Million Homes with 100 Free Channels
The Federal Government has revamped its Digital Switch Over project to deliver free satellite TV to at least 40 million Nigerian households. The new system replaces the old terrestrial network with a nationwide satellite platform. It already broadcasts over 73 channels and aims to expand to 100 free channels in the coming months. NBC’s Director General, Charles Ebuebu, explained that the previous model covered fewer than one-quarter of the country and required over 160 transmission towers. The satellite approach overcomes these gaps and ensures clear picture quality from day one. Under this plan, NBC will continue as regulator while NIGCOMSAT provides the satellite and ground services. The initiative aims to boost access to local content, promote unity, and improve information flow for viewers everywhere.
