DSS to Appeal Life Sentences for Convicted Ansaru Commanders

DSS to Appeal Life Sentences for Convicted Ansaru Commanders

The Department of State Services will challenge the life terms handed to Mahmud Usman (Abu Bara’a) and Abubakar Abba (Mahmud al-Nigeri) by the Abuja High Court. Both men had pleaded guilty to 32 terrorism charges. A senior DSS official told national TV that life imprisonment is too lenient given their role in the Oriire, Oyo State kidnappings. The two commanders were accused of abducting pupils and teachers and allegedly beheading two teachers to pressure the government. The DSS says the severity of these crimes demands a harsher penalty. It argues that only maximum sentences can deliver true justice for the victims and their families.
