Jordanian Figures Demand US Troop Withdrawal and Review of Defence Deal
More than 130 Jordanian political, academic, cultural, union and tribal figures have demanded the withdrawal of foreign troops from Jordan. They also want the country’s 2021 defence agreement with the United States withdrawn, reviewed by parliament, cancelled or restricted. In a joint statement, the signatories said the US military presence has exposed Jordan to security, political and economic risks. They warned that attacks on facilities hosting US forces could draw Jordan into the escalating regional confrontation between the US and Iran. The group called for Jordanian airports, ports, military bases and other strategic facilities to be kept out of military or logistical operations linked to the conflict. They urged the government to adopt what they described as true neutrality and protect the country’s sovereignty and stability.
