Violent Clash as Police Arrest Baruwa During NURTW Secretariat Takeover in Abuja

Violent Clash as Police Arrest Baruwa During NURTW Secretariat Takeover in Abuja

Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, the court-recognised president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, was arrested by FCT Police when he tried to enforce a court order at the union’s Abuja secretariat. His supporters report they were beaten, teargassed, and one person was shot during the operation. The arrest follows a March judgment by the National Industrial Court directing the rival Musiliu Akinsanya faction to vacate the premises and hand over all union assets and documents to Baruwa’s team. Baruwa says he submitted the court rulings to police beforehand but was still blocked from resuming office. He told journalists the takeover was peaceful and lawful. He urged reconciliation, insisting his faction only seeks to implement court orders and restore proper leadership to the union.
