FG Opens Public Consultation on State Police Bill, Sets Seven-Week Draft Timeline

The Federal Government has opened a two-week window for Nigerians, civil society groups, security agencies, academics, professional bodies and state governments to submit proposals on the proposed National Policing Bill. The Presidential Working Group, chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, is reviewing the Police Act 2020 and related laws. The aim is to create a legal framework for state policing while setting national standards for accountability, human rights, funding and oversight. The seven-week timetable runs from July 27 to September 14, 2026. A draft Executive Bill is expected to be presented to President Bola Tinubu on September 3 before further nationwide consultations and submission to the National Assembly. Under the proposal, any state seeking to establish a police service must show it can provide proper recruitment, vetting, training, salaries, pensions, equipment, complaints procedures, firearms control, independent oversight and sustainable funding.
