Bishop Kukah Clarifies Origin, Urges Nigerians to Stop Calling Him a Hausa Man

At the 16th convocation of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Sokoto’s Catholic Bishop Matthew Kukah explained that he hails from Anchuna in Kaduna State and is a typical Nigerian, not a Hausa man by origin. He appealed to Nigerians to stop labeling him based on ethnicity. Installed as the new Chancellor by Governor Soludo, Kukah praised Anambra’s strong investment in education and charged graduates to uphold good character and serve their communities, the South-East, and the nation. Governor Soludo, in turn, celebrated academic excellence with a ₦4 million reward for the best graduating student and postgraduate scholarships for 37 first-class honours graduates. Kukah pledged to help the university surpass its goals, while Soludo urged higher institutions to raise innovative, solution-driven graduates ready to lead with courage and purpose.

It's interesting he emphasized his Anchuna roots, yet people often cling to simplistic ethnic labels regardless of actual origin.

I get why he pushed back on the Hausa tag, but it seems naive to expect ethnic labels to disappear from our discourse.

Media and educators should highlight diverse Nigerian identities like Anchuna alongside tribal affiliations to reduce stereotyping in public discussions.
