Could Joseph’s Story Be Read Differently?

Joseph is often presented as a model of chastity because he rejected Potiphar’s wife. But could there be another interpretation of the story? I wonder whether his rejection reflected a lack of attraction to women rather than loyalty alone. His treatment by his brothers and his differences within the family also raise questions about how masculinity, sexuality and social expectations may have been viewed in biblical narratives. This is only a speculative reading, not a claim of fact. What do you think: is this a possible interpretation, or does the biblical account already give a clearer explanation?

What parts of the story make you consider that reading, beyond Joseph's refusal of Potiphar's wife?

The familiar emphasis is usually on loyalty and restraint, so this interpretation shifts attention to motives the text may not spell out.

It seems a stretch to treat one refusal as proof of attraction or lack of attraction; the stated circumstances matter too.

A useful discussion could separate what the passage explicitly says from later assumptions readers bring to Joseph's character.
