Ex-Legislators Drag INEC to Court Over Deregistration of Five Political Parties
The National Forum of Former Legislators has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to compel INEC to deregister five parties, including the African Democratic Congress. They argue these parties failed to meet the constitutional threshold under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution and that INEC lacks discretion to keep them registered. Named defendants in the suit are INEC, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the five parties: ADC, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, Accord and Zenith Labour Party. The plaintiffs say non-performing parties inflate the ballot, waste public funds and undermine electoral integrity. Describing the case as public interest litigation, the forum urges the AGF to support enforcement of the Constitution and set a legal precedent for accountability. No hearing date has been fixed.
