Lagos State Partners Three IPPs to Ramp Up Electricity Supply
The Lagos State Government has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement with three independent power plants to strengthen electricity supply and advance energy reforms. The pact was signed at Lagos House, Marina, in the presence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Abiodun Ogunleye. Under the agreement, Mainland Power Limited, the revamped Akute Independent Power Plant under Fenchurch Power, and Peninsula Integrated Power Project will combine for about 60MW today. They plan to rehabilitate existing assets and expand capacity to 200–400MW within two to three years through market-driven investments. Mainland Power’s 8.8MW facility will support critical sites such as the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and the State Urban Renewal Agency. The 26MW Akute plant will serve nearby communities, including the Adiyan Water Works, while the 21MW Island corridor plant will supply key government infrastructure in Lekki and Marina. The participating firms commended the administration for creating an enabling environment and signaled confidence in deeper private-sector participation. This initiative is part of Lagos’s broader push to improve electricity access and drive economic growth with more reliable power.
