Court Dismisses ADC Ward Lawsuit Against Senator Kingibe, Imposes ₦10m Fines on Plaintiffs and Lawyer
The Federal High Court in Abuja struck out a suit by ADC Wuse Ward officials seeking to uphold Senator Ireti Kingibe’s suspension. Justice Peter Lifu held that internal party discipline is not subject to judicial review. Describing the case as frivolous and baseless, the judge fined each plaintiff ₦10 million under Sections 82 and 83 of the Electoral Act. He also imposed a ₦10 million penalty on the plaintiffs’ counsel for filing the suit. Kingibe, who represents the FCT in the Senate, was suspended by ward executives on March 10 over alleged anti-party activities. The officials asked the court to bar her from ADC meetings and functions, claiming the suspension followed due process. Counsel for the senator argued that the plaintiffs lacked the locus to sue and ignored the party’s internal procedures. The court agreed and awarded punitive costs in favour of Kingibe.
