If Nigeria Splits, Who Would Control Abuja and Lagos?

I imagine Nigeria might one day divide into five or six new nations. If that happens, I wonder which region would control Abuja. I also want to know who would govern Lagos. I’m from the East and worry I might need residency papers in those cities. Is it possible for Easterners like me to join other regions to avoid being seen as foreigners? I even plan to marry a partner from Lagos so my family can feel at home in both places. But first, we need to know where the borders would lie. Who takes Abuja? Who takes Lagos?

It seems unlikely that one region would keep both Abuja and Lagos given current political and economic divides across the country.

I'm not convinced the East would automatically need new papers—internal migration rules could remain unchanged in a new federal setup.

State governments should draft clear residency agreements for shared cities to prevent confusion if new borders emerge after a split.
