FCT High Court Dismisses Sadiya Umar-Farouq’s Bid to Vacate Bench Warrant

FCT High Court Dismisses Sadiya Umar-Farouq’s Bid to Vacate Bench Warrant

The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo rejected former Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouq’s application to set aside a bench warrant issued after she failed to appear for arraignment. Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie found that her reported arthritis and heart disease did not excuse her absence and called the medical reasons “bogus.” Umar-Farouq is being prosecuted by the EFCC alongside Bashir Alkali and Sani Mohammed on charges of criminal conspiracy, abuse of office and diversion of public funds totalling $1.3 million and ₦746.7 million. The judge emphasised that criminal proceedings require personal presence before seeking any relief. EFCC’s counsel urged enforcement of an earlier undertaking for her production in court, noting that the grace period had expired. The case has been adjourned to July 2 for the arraignment of all defendants.

It seems the court strictly demands personal appearance, even for health concerns, no exceptions allowed.

I no see why arthritis fit excuse missing arraignment; accountability must apply to everybody regardless of status.

Lawyers should advise their clients to seek timely court permissions for health issues to avoid bench warrants and further complications.
