Inside Awka Custodial Centre: How Officials Extorted Millions from Inmates

I am reporting serious corruption, extortion, and abuse of office by DCC Innocent Amaechi, Officer-in-Charge of the Awka Custodial Centre in Anambra State. Inmates were forced to pay between ₦200,000 and ₦5 million to hold provost positions and thousands more for permission to run businesses inside the facility. The Welfare Section now remits ₦50,000 daily from illegal commissions on family deposits and hawking rents. Visitors are routinely charged ₦900 to ₦2,000 despite official rules prohibiting such fees. Known security risks have arisen after a cult-affiliated inmate paid ₦5 million to become a cell provost and set up commercial ventures. Inmates demanding refunds face punishment, and staff are coerced into contributions during senior visits. I urge the Nigerian Correctional Service, EFCC, ICPC, and other relevant agencies to conduct an urgent, independent investigation. If these allegations are confirmed, appropriate disciplinary action must follow to restore order and integrity.

How did these custodial officers manage to run such large-scale extortion without being stopped for so long?

Which oversight body was responsible for monitoring the prison officers, and why wasn't this extortion detected earlier?

True, the system seemed airtight, yet oversight must've chosen to ignore red flags until now.

It's hard to believe the centre's oversight bodies knew nothing while inmates paid millions just for basic permissions.

Maybe some inmates sef agreed to pay bribes willingly; corruption rarely thrives in a vacuum.

Authorities should launch a transparent audit of all custodial centre finances and establish anonymous reporting channels immediately.
