Tinubu Launches N137bn Borno Road Rehab to Boost Trade and Security

Tinubu Launches N137bn Borno Road Rehab to Boost Trade and Security

President Bola Tinubu commissioned the rehabilitation of the Bama–Banki and Dikwa–Gamboru–Ngala roads in Borno State. The N137 billion project aims to restore vital transport links in the North-East and strengthen regional trade. Speaking at the flag-off, Tinubu said improved roads would ease movement of goods, help farmers reach markets and enhance security patrols in insurgency-affected areas. He described passable highways as essential for both commerce and safety. Dangote Group, selected under the Federal Roads Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme, will deliver these corridors alongside 11 other major routes across Nigeria. Works include concrete pavement, bridges, road furniture and safety facilities. The Minister of Works noted initial delays due to insecurity but said each route has been revalued to reflect cost updates. Borno’s governor welcomed the upgrade as central to post-insurgency recovery and cross-border trade with neighbouring countries.

That N137 billion price tag for just two stretches feels hefty. Past projects often stall midway despite big budgets.

Improving roads might not guarantee security or trade if patrols and markets aren't ready. Infrastructure alone isn't a magic fix.

Traders might pool resources for bulk transport now that roads are fixed; e go help cut logistics costs and open markets.
