National Geographic Sea Bird Suffers Third Norovirus Outbreak Since May

National Geographic Sea Bird Suffers Third Norovirus Outbreak Since May

A cruise ship operated by Lindblad Expeditions experienced its third norovirus outbreak since May, the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program reports. On July 12, 18 of the 62 passengers aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird suffered vomiting and abdominal cramps. This occurred two days after departing Sitka and three days before arriving in Juneau. Crew members isolated the sick and intensified cleaning under the ship’s outbreak response plan. The source remains unknown as health officials review sanitation procedures and await confirmatory lab results from collected samples. This latest incident follows outbreaks in late May and late June, making Sea Bird the only vessel hit three times among eight cruise ship outbreaks at US ports this year.

Absolutely, extra deep cleaning rounds and surprise hygiene drills could really help keep norovirus at bay on that ship.

I dey think passenger hygiene fit be big factor here, no be only the ship's cleaning methods we should blame.

Cruise lines should introduce hourly sanitizing wipes in common areas and mandatory handwashing stations before dining to help curb norovirus spread.
