Dangote Tours East Africa to Advance Regional Refinery Initiative
President Museveni of Uganda met Aliko Dangote in Kampala to discuss plans for an East African regional oil refinery. He reiterated Uganda’s longstanding stance against exporting crude without domestic value addition, highlighting delays in production as a strategic move to secure its own processing capacity. Museveni welcomed a larger regional facility, saying greater African integration and shared markets will strengthen project viability and deliver broader prosperity. He confirmed Uganda’s support for a joint refinery while continuing work on its national plant in Hoima. The tour also included meetings with Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Dangote’s East African engagements coincide with major regional economic forums in Kenya and Rwanda.
