Tinubu Tells Governors to Prioritise Roads Over Unnecessary Flyovers, Restates State Police Plan

President Bola Tinubu has urged state governors to prioritise roads and other projects that directly improve citizens’ lives, rather than building flyovers in areas with low traffic. He said states now receive four to five times more from the Federation Account and should use the funds to improve accessibility and security. Speaking while receiving Oyo traditional rulers at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu also addressed the rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oriire LGA. He said the Federal Government rejected the kidnappers’ demands for ransom and the release of detained gang members. The President said the incident informed plans to expand the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions to shorten response times against terrorism and banditry. He also restated that state police would be created with safeguards against abuse, citing cross-border insecurity from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger as a major concern.

States should publish traffic data, project costs, and maintenance plans before committing funds, so residents can judge the priorities.
