Ebonyi APC Split: Umahi Challenges Nwifuru’s Consensus Picks, Demands Direct Primaries
A crisis has erupted in Ebonyi APC after Works Minister Dave Umahi criticised Governor Francis Nwifuru’s plan to anoint consensus candidates for all elective offices. Through his media aide, Umahi insisted no aspirant should be barred from buying nomination forms. He urged dialogue among hopefuls and called for direct primaries where agreement fails. The state APC rebuked Umahi’s comments, warning they risk misleading party members and undermining established leadership. In a statement, the party accused the minister’s media handlers of misrepresentation and cautioned against inciting discord between the president and the governor. Meanwhile, a pro-Umahi group has demanded an apology from the state APC for its remarks. Governor Nwifuru has scheduled a restricted stakeholders’ meeting to finalise positions still unresolved by consensus.
