NPFL to Award ₦1bn to 2026/27 Champions as Part of Major League Reforms
The National Sports Commission and Nigeria Football Federation have agreed that the 2026/27 NPFL winners will receive at least ₦1 billion. Runners-up and third place are set to earn ₦500 million and ₦300 million respectively. This landmark prize structure aims to boost professionalism and the commercial value of domestic football. Stakeholders also endorsed stricter club licensing requirements and introduced a ₦2 million minimum wage for NPFL players. New contracts and performance-based packages were finalised for the Super Eagles coaching team, while Eric Chelle will oversee both the senior side and the Under-23 “Dream Team” to create a seamless talent pathway. Long-term plans include immediate preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup and enhanced support for the Super Falcons ahead of WAFCON. Officials say these measures will strengthen player welfare, raise league standards and position Nigerian football for sustained success.
