Police Extradite ‘PutSammy’ to US to Face $1.5m Romance Scam Charges

Police Extradite ‘PutSammy’ to US to Face $1.5m Romance Scam Charges

The Nigeria Police Force, working with INTERPOL Abuja, has extradited Samuel Ugberease, known as PutSammy, to the United States. He will face charges of online romance scam, wire fraud, and related financial crimes. Ugberease was arrested at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, in December 2025 after arriving from South Africa. A Federal High Court in Lagos approved his extradition on 14 May 2026 under the Extradition Act. Investigators say that between 2014 and 2018, he led a syndicate targeting women in the US Eastern District of North Carolina. The group used fake dating profiles to build trust and extort over $1.5million under false pretences. Proceeds were laundered through multiple bank accounts. The police reaffirm their commitment to intelligence-led policing and international partnerships. They pledge continued cooperation to combat cybercrime, fraud, and other transnational organised offences.

How do you think this extradition will shape Nigeria's efforts against online romance scams moving forward?

Absolutely! This move shows our police mean business, and I bet scammers will think twice before targeting Naija lovers.

It's odd that only INTERPOL collaboration led to his arrest, suggesting local investigators might lack resources or focus on cybercrime.

Sending him abroad looks tough on crime, yet Nigeria's own financial crime courts should handle local victims' restitution first.

Banks and social platforms need stronger identity checks and fraud alerts to help prevent future romance scams before they escalate to extradition.
