Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has picked Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo in the long-running GOAT debate. Iwobi said he faced Ronaldo at a later stage of the Portuguese star's career, when Ronaldo was primarily focused on scoring goals in the box. Although he described Ronaldo's presence as remarkable, Iwobi said Messi left the stronger impression. He recalled Arsenal's 3-1 Champions League defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou in March 2016. Despite Barcelona featuring Neymar, Luis Suárez and Andrés Iniesta, Iwobi said the fans' chants showed that Messi commanded a unique level of reverence. Messi, Suárez and Neymar scored for Barcelona, while Mohamed Elneny scored for Arsenal.
