Manchester United have identified Sandro Tonali as a top backup option in case their pursuit of Elliot Anderson is hijacked by Manchester City. United are planning a major midfield overhaul this summer. Casemiro’s contract ends soon and Manuel Ugarte is out of favour. Nottingham Forest’s Anderson is the first choice, but City are reportedly already in advanced talks. Forest are asking up to £100 million for Anderson, so United have begun lining up Tonali. The former AC Milan midfielder won Serie A in 2022 and is seen as a solid tactical fit. Newcastle value Tonali highly and may demand at least £100 million to even enter negotiations. United’s recruitment team view him as indispensable, but acknowledge he won’t come cheap.
