Opposition Parties Rush to Meet INEC’s Deadline for 2027 Primaries

Opposition Parties Rush to Meet INEC’s Deadline for 2027 Primaries

Opposition parties across Nigeria are racing against the clock to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission’s May 10, 2026 deadline for submitting updated membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections. The extension announced on March 27 requires parties to file digital membership records at least 21 days before their primaries, with May 30 set as the final date. Leaders from the New Nigeria People’s Party, Social Democratic Party, Labour Party, Nigeria Democratic Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Young Progressives Party, and African Action Congress all confirmed they have complied or are finalising documentation. They highlighted regional strengths—from NNPP’s strongholds in the North to Labour Party’s membership surge in Taraba and Adamawa—and emphasised robust internal organisation. INEC insists that timely submission of registries will help verify genuine members and enforce the Electoral Act’s provisions. As the deadline approaches, parties have intensified registration drives, emergency consultations, and coalition talks to avoid complications and strengthen their positions ahead of the 2027 polls.

With parties scrambling to update membership registers by May 2026, do you think this deadline will really strengthen the electoral process?

This deadline should help weed out ghost voters and improve accuracy, as long as INEC enforces the rules properly.

Even with the extension announced in March, some smaller opposition groups may still struggle to gather accurate membership data on time.

I'm not convinced that rushing a register update won't introduce more errors and disputes before the primaries actually begin.

Opposition parties should set up regional data teams now to cross-check registers and avoid last-minute bottlenecks ahead of the INEC deadline.
