Ekpu Oro Figures Shine at Uyo Museum’s International Museum Day Celebration 2026
The National Museum Society, Akwa Ibom Chapter, joined the National Commission for Museums and Monuments to celebrate International Museum Day at the Uyo National Museum. This year’s symbol was the Ekpu Oro ancestral figures of the Oro Kingdom under the theme “Museums Uniting a Divided World.” Scholars, royalty, collectors, artists and museum advocates attended the event. Crown Prince Chris Abasi Eyo represented the Ata Oro of Oron Kingdom. Dr Peter Esu and Dr Efiong Eyefoki delivered keynote presentations on the importance of cultural heritage and art history. Speakers stressed that Ekpu Oro carvings are memorials created to honour ancestors, not objects of worship. These figures encode over 20 generations of Oron history and date back to 2000 BCE. Today, the priceless Ekpu Oro works are preserved in museums across Nigeria and around the world, shining a light on Oron heritage and the uniting power of museums.
