Audit Index Shows 30 States Lag in Public Fund Transparency

Audit Index Shows 30 States Lag in Public Fund Transparency

A new Subnational Audit Efficacy Index reveals that 30 of Nigeria’s 36 states scored below average in transparency and accountability for public funds. Ekiti leads with 72%, followed by Gombe and Yobe at 68%. At the bottom are Abia and Rivers with just 9%, while several others remain under 20%. The report highlights major gaps in audit independence, report publication and oversight. Only a handful of states have granted financial autonomy to auditors or published local government audit reports. Civil society and media participation also remains weak. How can the nation expect probity from leaders mired in corruption? This moral challenge will linger until stronger reforms and political commitment restore public trust.

Do you think poor audit follow-up or outdated data systems drive the low scores here?

It's surprising that economic powerhouses like Rivers would manage only 9 percent transparency on public spending.

State governments should publish detailed budget reports online and invite citizen oversight to improve accountability scores.
