Court Martial of 36 Officers Over Alleged Coup Plot Resumes May 8
Nigeria’s Court Martial proceedings against 36 military officers accused of plotting to overthrow the civilian government will reconvene on May 8. Defence Headquarters confirmed the trial, which began last Friday at a military base in Abuja, will continue behind closed doors without media access. Major General Samaila Uba told AFP the officers faced newly sworn-in justices as the legal process officially started. At the same time, six civilians are also appearing before the Federal High Court in Abuja this week in connection with the same alleged conspiracy. All six have pleaded not guilty to charges related to the foiled coup plot. The cases come at a sensitive moment as Nigeria approaches over 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since the end of military junta governance in 1999.
