Sanwo-Olu Orders Demolition of Unsafe Buildings After Alakija Collapse, Vows to Prosecute Defaulters

Sanwo-Olu Orders Demolition of Unsafe Buildings After Alakija Collapse, Vows to Prosecute Defaulters

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the immediate demolition of all buildings marked as structurally distressed around the Alakija collapse site. He warned that owners who flouted safety regulations will face prosecution under state law. The directive follows the collapse of a three-storey building that claimed nine lives and left 27 people rescued alive after an overnight operation. Officials say the structure was previously flagged as unsafe and occupants ignored evacuation orders. During an on-site inspection, the Commissioner for Information described the tragedy as avoidable. He praised emergency agencies—including LASEMA, the fire service, police and other responders—for their prompt and coordinated rescue efforts. Investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing. The governor urged residents in all marked buildings to vacate immediately to prevent further disasters.
