Senate Scraps New Service Rules and Reopens 2027 Leadership Race
The Nigerian Senate has reversed its recent Standing Order changes, restoring previous eligibility criteria for top posts such as Senate President, Deputy President and Senate Leader. The scrapped amendment would have restricted these offices to senators with eight years’ continuous service and two consecutive terms before nomination. It also set a rigid ranking order favouring former principal officers over newcomer senators. Lawmakers argued the changes risked constitutional challenges and internal conflict. With the reversal, any senator with at least four years in the National Assembly can now vie for presiding roles. The move is expected to sharpen early political contests ahead of the 2027 cycle.
