President Mahama: Basic Needs Trump LGBTQ+ Concerns in Ghana

President John Mahama has said that LGBTQ+ rights are not Ghana’s most pressing issue. He spoke during a World Affairs Council dialogue. Mahama stressed that Ghana must prioritise education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing and shelter. He noted that while LGBTQ+ debates remain sensitive worldwide, they rank below essential public needs on Ghana’s agenda. He referenced a private members bill in Parliament, urging discussions to respect the constitution, human rights and social cohesion. Mahama also acknowledged international reactions, including the withdrawal of an honorary doctorate by a foreign university, and called for continued dialogue and mutual respect.
