Kogi Orphanage Principal Says ‘Rescued’ Pupils Actually Escaped From Bandits
An attack by suspected armed bandits on April 26 at Daarulkitab Islamic Training Centre in Zariagi, Kogi State, left 23 pupils and the proprietor’s wife abducted. Initial statements by the state government and police reported that up to 17 of the children had been rescued by security agencies. During an on-site briefing, Principal Mohammed Tajudeen clarified that the children were not recovered by troops but fled into the bush and later returned. He stressed that those pupils “ran away when the kidnappers came” and hid until they could make their way back. Tajudeen also addressed claims that the Dahallukitab Group of Schools lacked registration. He confirmed both the school and the orphanage are registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and the state Ministry of Women Affairs. The police say the principal’s wife remains in captivity at an undisclosed location.
