Interior Minister Flags Over 840,000 Visa Overstayers in Nigeria
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed that Nigeria’s upgraded immigration tracking system shows more than 848,000 foreigners are overstaying their visas. He made the disclosure during a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. Tunji-Ojo compared the challenge to Nigerian visa overstayers in the UK and called for stronger international cooperation. He noted that tackling irregular migration could help curb crimes such as human trafficking and smuggling. On bilateral agreements, the minister stressed the importance of dignified returns and dismissed concerns about Nigeria accepting foreign prisoners. He clarified that the newly signed Nigeria–UK migration pact focuses strictly on Nigerian nationals and excludes inmate transfers. He also distinguished the agreement from the controversial Rwanda plan, stating that it respects family rights and treats each case under specific legal conditions. He assured that returned Nigerians will be handled with dignity and in line with their fundamental rights.
