Borno Model Reintegrates 3,762 Former Insurgents and Their Families

Borno State has formally reintegrated 3,762 former insurgents and their relatives under its non-kinetic peacebuilding initiative. The group includes 720 men, 992 spouses and 2,050 children who surrendered voluntarily as low-risk and minor clients. After completing deradicalisation, disarmament, rehabilitation and vocational training at Maiduguri’s Hajj Camp, participants received skills in tailoring, carpentry, metalwork, phone repairs and solar installation. Women were also trained in soap making, knitting and catering, with starter packs provided for each trade. Since July 2021, the programme has welcomed over 9,600 repentant insurgents from across Borno’s local government areas. Officials say this effort strengthens social cohesion, restores lives and supports thousands of displaced persons with education, healthcare and livelihood services. Security advisers, community leaders and faith figures urged beneficiaries to stay law-abiding and give back to their communities. Many attendees expressed gratitude for the chance to rebuild their lives.

I'm not convinced voluntary surrender alone guarantees lasting peace; there must be accountability measures for those who might slip back.

Community centres should organise joint workshops so former insurgents and locals build trust over shared activities like farming or trades.
