The Bauchi State Police Command says it has arrested a 19-year-old woman over the alleged poisoning of her husband’s meal about 40 days after their wedding in Gwamma village, Bauchi Local Government Area. Police said they received a distress call on August 12 and officers from C Division, Tafawa Balewa Estate, responded. The husband was taken to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where he is reportedly stable. The police said an empty bottle suspected to have contained poison and remnants of the food were recovered as exhibits. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, and the suspect is expected to be charged after the investigation is concluded.

Forty days into a marriage is painfully early for such an allegation, and the situation must be distressing for everyone involved.

The timing is shocking, but it is still an allegation. Better to let the investigation establish what actually happened.

An arrest is not the same as proof. It is better to wait for the investigation and any medical evidence before drawing conclusions.

Police should preserve the meal or related samples properly and let forensic results guide the case rather than public speculation.
