Duane “Keffe D” Davis Faces Trial Nearly 30 Years After Tupac Shakur’s Murder
Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was killed in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting, Duane “Keffe D” Davis is set to stand trial in the only criminal case linked to the rapper’s death. Davis, 63, has pleaded not guilty to murder with a deadly weapon in furtherance of a criminal gang. Prosecutors allege that he helped plan the September 1996 attack after a confrontation involving members of the South Side Compton Crips and Shakur’s entourage. They do not accuse him of firing the fatal shots, but say he helped organise the attack and provided the gun. The prosecution is expected to rely heavily on Davis’ public statements, including claims in his memoir and interviews. His defence team is expected to argue that parts of those accounts were exaggerated or unreliable. With the alleged gunman never charged and many witnesses no longer available, the trial may not answer every question about one of hip-hop’s most enduring unsolved murder cases.
