How Nigeria’s Police Tracker Was Hijacked to Spy on Politicians’ Enemies and Mistresses
A retired senior police officer reveals that a real-time monitoring platform, launched in 2015 to track kidnappers, was repurposed for political surveillance. Successive inspectors general of police failed to maintain or upgrade the system. Subscription fees went unpaid for years, and the service provider eventually withdrew support. Politicians in the National Assembly and the presidential villa gained access. They used the tracker to follow their enemies and mistresses instead of pursuing criminals. The collapse of this tool highlights the need for strict oversight, regular upgrades, and clear separation between technical and operational units in policing technology.
